Mole Examination, Mole Mapping, and Mole Removal

Moles are spots or lesions on the skin that originate from pigment cells. While they are generally benign (non-cancerous), some moles can, in rare cases, become cancerous.

Moles are spots or lesions on the skin that originate from pigment cells. While they are generally benign (non-cancerous), some moles can, in rare cases, become cancerous. Therefore, regular examination, mapping, and, when necessary, excision of moles are important.

Mole examination is conducted by a dermatologist using a specialized device called a dermoscope. During the examination, all moles on the skin are carefully inspected. The specialist evaluates specific features of moles, such as symmetry, colors, sizes, and edge regularity, along with some dermoscopic findings. This examination can help detect early-stage cancer or abnormalities.

Mole mapping is a method that records dermoscopic images used to document the locations and characteristics of moles on a person's skin surface. This mapping provides a reference point to monitor changes in future examinations. During the mapping process, the location, size, color, edge regularity, and other dermoscopic features of each mole are determined. This information is utilized to track potential changes in moles during future examinations and guide treatment if necessary.

If a mole is found to be suspicious or carries a risk of cancer, your dermatologist may recommend a procedure called excision. Mole excision involves the surgical removal of an abnormal mole. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, and the mole is completely removed. The excised tissue is then sent to the laboratory for pathological examination. This step is taken to confirm the presence or absence of cancer cells.

Mole examination, mapping, and, when necessary, excision are important steps for skin health. These processes allow for the early diagnosis and treatment of potentially dangerous moles. Regularly consulting with your dermatologist enables the monitoring of moles on your skin and taking appropriate treatment measures when needed.
