Scabies is a skin infection that affects humans and causes itching. The cause of the disease is a microscopic parasite called Sarcoptes scabiei. This parasite lives and reproduces by burrowing tunnels in the upper layers of the skin. Scabies can be transmitted through contact, especially through skin-to-skin contact or the use of infected person's belongings.
The symptoms of scabies usually appear 2 to 6 weeks after infestation. Some common symptoms include:
1. Intense itching: Severe itching occurs in the areas affected by scabies. It is often worse at night.
2. Skin rashes: Scabies can cause skin rashes such as redness, blisters, small red lesions, and crusting in various areas of the body. Commonly affected areas include wrists, finger webs, elbows, knees, buttocks, chest, and genitalia.
3. Burrows: Tunnels created by the scabies parasite may be visible as thin gray or brown lines. These burrows are often found between the fingers or in skin folds. Sometimes, blistering may occur at the ends of these tunnels.
The treatment for scabies is typically done with medications. Your doctor will recommend a suitable treatment plan based on the severity and extent of the scabies. Treatment often involves the use of topical creams or lotions. Medications applied to the skin kill the parasites and alleviate symptoms. Additionally, limiting contact to prevent the spread of scabies, treating the entire family, cleaning personal items, and washing contaminated clothing are important measures.
Diagnosis and treatment of scabies should be done by a doctor. Self-treatment or the use of medications without proper guidance is not recommended. If you have symptoms of scabies, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.
